May 20 – World Bee Day: The BBC at the Laboratory of Applied Beekeeping of the Department of Animal Science

May 20 has been established by the United Nations as World Bee Day, aiming to raise public awareness and promote measures to protect this invaluable insect, essential for the continuation of life on our planet. To a large extent, food production for both humans and animals, global biodiversity, and the preservation of the natural environment rely on the bee’s pollination capabilities. It is no exaggeration to say that our life on Earth largely depends on the survival and well-being of both bee colonies and the beekeepers who care for them.

Following the loss of thousands of bee colonies during the natural disasters caused by storm Daniel in 2023, the British broadcaster BBC created a short film portraying the efforts of a professional beekeeper and postgraduate student at the Department of Animal Science of the University of Thessaly (UTH), as he attempts to revive his hives after the catastrophe. Supporting his endeavor were the Laboratory of Applied Beekeeping at UTH and the company APIVITA SA., with part of the filming taking place at the Laboratory’s apiary, located on the Gaiopolis campus of the University.
